Billings Benefits from Montana Mining History

Montana, the nation's leader in coal reserves, finds itself in the middle of an economic goldmine, and Billings, Montana's largest city, is poised to reap the benefits. With new mining companies looking to produce mining sites near Billings, the state will look to restore its rich mining past. Settlers traveled to the state in the 19th century with hopes of striking it rich through the ample coal reserves near Billings. Many of these coal mining districts later developed into today's towns and cities like Billings throughout Montana.

The coal mining industry has provided Billings, Montana with revenue since its introduction with the gold miners in the mid-19th century. Today, even though Montana contains the nation's largest reserves in coal, it is only third in coal production. Mining companies are looking to take a page out of the history book and establish new coal mines throughout Montana, specifically near Billings. These mines will help Montana reach its full mining potential and become recognized for its resources, as it has been for hundreds of years, as well as serve as economic engine for Billings and other Montana towns.
